Silat Ksatriya art of self defence is a special practice of martial arts. Its speciality is in the fact that there is no need to borrow or to look into other arts to find answers of practice. Grappling, ground fighting, locking techniques, submission techniques, pressure points, stand up combat, blocking techniques, striking techniques, kicking techniques, weapon techniques, breathing techniques, healing techniques, herbal medicines and and much more can all be found in this traditional art of self defence.
A Silat student’s training focuses not only on fighting and learning self defense skills but more on uniting the body, mind and heart through the traditional concepts. Traditional methods of martial arts is two-fold; to train to become a good person and to do your best to help all people. Martial arts in its truest form is to combat the self which is our own ego. This is the greatest opponent.
Silat Ksatriya principles and its concepts are civilized disciplined and humane. This Silat embrace certain concepts which are totally different from most of the other oriental martial arts. It is more than just a martial art; It involves mastering the physical with well-coordinated body movements depicting the artistry of the surrounding nature which is also complimented by the distinctive cultural music and traditional dance movements. This Silat is the most fascinating, elegant, graceful and the most esoteric of all the martial arts that exist today. It is essential for those who wish to be the disciples of this Silat to possess artistic qualities because the Silat’s ceremonial costume and accoutrements alone mirror its distinctive features.
Curriculum and Syllabus Procedure for progression in the art for prospective Silat exponents involves distinctive phases of concentrations and levels of learning.Silat is a complete Traditional Battlefield Martial Art, though many diverse weapons are taught in the syllabus. However, the empty hand applications are taught first to all beginners.
Asas and Senam Silat:
These are the basic foundation in the style. They teach the basic warm up ,stretching(yoga), breathing meditation techniques , including stances body alignment, punching, kicking, rolling, and break-falls.
Palempas – Reflex Sensitivity Flow Drills:
The hand foot partner drills range from stepping through drills, similar to those found in Karate and conditioning rapid fire drills found in southern mantis arts of kung fu, two man combat forms , to sticking hand type drills, similar to single hand and double hand chi sao from Wing Chun,and the Hubud lubud of Filipino Martial Arts , teaching sensitivity and trapping. The Silat hand and leg drills are extensive enough to form an art of their own, and are made more combative as the student progresses. They incorporate the exclusive Silat limb destructions, which make the art so hard to beat.
Jurus Duduk – Sitting Techniques:
We can see that the dodging techniques is stressing on the hands as source of power/strength. These moves are the core moves which is meant for blocking and knocking down of an opponent. In all, the Jurus Duduk looks somewhat unique compared to other styles. This is usually done in pairs by sitting position, two facing each other, with both legs folded. Sparring partners performing strikes and defense in sitting position. Purpose of this training is to develop one’s twisting motion from the core of the body and to develope and condition the arms and developing reflex actions and imagination and visualization skills to figure out and decide which stance and moves are proper to be used in a standing position. If hand moves are mastered, the proper stance to use can easily be determined.
All the jurus are trained in pairs whilst in a seated cross legged position , this evolved from the practice of training after prayers in the temple. Seated in pairs, students practice alternately attacking and defending, in all jurus contact is made between the forearms in order to condition them.
Jurus Beridin – Standing Combinations of techniques:
After the students have mastered the jurus duduk sitting and strengthened their forearms, they begin practicing the jurus in conjunction with standing other numerous standing jurus at differing levels of height of stances beridin and step patterns langkahs.
Pelebat – ABCs of the system:
The alphabets and root motions of the system, short upright forms .
Tapak and Langkah – Steps and Footwork Patterns:
They are basic steppng and footwork drills that form the basics of any attack or defence. Silat footwork pattens are based on sacred geometry which are the Langkah ie Clockwork 8 point steps , triangles , squares, cross, circle and many others . They are designed to enable the practitioner to flank evade and enter and reach a position that is at the same time beneficial to himself, and places the opponent in some difficulty. Punching and kicking combinations are also incorporated at a higher level, as well as different stepping patterns and rythms.
Students shall learn various ways of attacking plus protecting competency which include:
Elakkan: evasionary footwork,staying away from approach/reach of opponent routines
Tangkisan: blocking procedures
Tangkapan and Kunchian: catching and locking techniques
Jathuan: Throwing and off balancing
Amuk: rampaging and blitzing agsinst multiple attackers, along with weapons method for example stick, swords blades knifes and many others.
This is a very sensible self-defense system taking a wholistic approach to combat, a intelligent mans art.
This will make every single Silat exponent ready to receive any attack and defend themselves adequalty and effeciently.
Buah – Combat Techniques:
Literally the fruits, these partner techniques are the basic defenses and counter attacks of Silat. They can be comparable to the more advanced techniques of Karate and kung fu one step sparring. They are the “fruits” of the basic training.
Buah Pukul Muat:
Rapid striking combinations of techniques aimed at the most dangerous pressure and nerve points , using all available weapons of the human body on an attacker , deadly stage for self-defense, the science of the 8 deadly limbs.
Buah Kunchi Mati:
As in Buah pukul but using locks breaks and grapples aswell.
Seni Bunga Tari – War Dance:
The traditional Play and dance of Silat is the evolution of the Langkah and techniques into the art of fighting between two combatants. It is the honing of the skills learned in the previous stages into an effective fighting system. At this stage the movements are refined from a science to a flowing gracefull art art , performed to music .
Seni Bela Diri – Artistic Self Defence:
The pace beats rythm plus energy movements associated with self defense purposes, artistic self defence with individual and unique style of each student . This is where silat excels. The self-defence arena is so important in society now, and silat skills allow a small person to overcome a larger one using positioning timing and footwork and a great understanding of the body mechanics and vulnerable areas to attack ..minimum effort and creating maximum damage on the agressor/s .
Silat is a comprehensive and complete combat art covering all ranges from weapons to ground fighting and multiple attakers . Because the art is all encompassing, it has been described as a “Jack of all Trades”. It has the deep stances of Karate , the power of shaolin kung fu and Thai boxing with the sensitivity of Tai chi and capoeira ; the locks and throws of judo akido ju jitsu with the weapons arsenal of Escrima Kalari Muay Boran , plus specialist and unique areas not found in many other martial arts such as the tantric fist vajra mukthi. With the fact that life or death challenges are not unheard of in South East Asia, the survival and success of Silat in the face of open challenges makes the system frighteningly effective a very brutal and effecient self defence system suitable for civilians , military , law enforcement alike .
More advanced techniques as well as Conditioning,Spirituality energy manipulation yoga and Tenaga dalam / Ilmu Batin, and Weapons are taught to suitable students at a later date.
